With that in mind, Oakley makes some of the best eye wear available to suit the rigors of any outdoor activity. Whether skiing, biking or just relaxing on the beach, Oakley has you covered.
In all honesty, is there any accessory company more synonymous with outdoor life than Oakley? Probably not. With over 600 patents for sports wear, Oakley is a true heavy hitter in the world of athletics. Regardless of the sport, Oakley has just what you need to help reach your peak performance. There is probably not a pastime in the world that hasn't benefited from Oakley's dedication to the sporting life. This is quite an accomplishment when considering Oakley's main competitors: Adidas, Nike and Reebok. Pretty impressive for a company that had such meager beginnings.
The Oakley company was started by, Jim Jannard, in his garage in 1975. He named his company after his dog and started out his business venture with the meager sum of $300. His first breakthrough came in the re-design of motorcycle grips, which were revolutionary at the time and used a special, patented material known as, "Unobtanium." Many Oakley products continue to implement this material, which is testament to Oakley's enduring quality.
After his initial success in the Motocross community, Jim Jannard continued to develop even more products for the then burgeoning BMX movement. He excelled in the production of goggles, gloves, grips, elbow and chin guards. As a result of his success in the Motocross and BMX communities, he took on the world of skiing and introduced a new pair of cutting edge goggles for that sporting community as well.
Since the early 1980s, Oakley has continued to grow at a staggering pace and is now a household name. Jim Jannard decided in 1995, to make his company public and began selling shares in it. A wise move by Jim that resulted in him becoming the second richest man in Orange County, with a staggering personal worth of an estimated $627 million. Not bad for a man who started out making motorcycle grips. His brands now attract legions of fans and he has verifiable roster of famous athletes, actors and musicians who all chose Oakley as their sport apparel, and eye wear, company of choice.
